What to Clean Before You Settle Into a New Home

Move-In Ready: What to Clean Before You Settle Into a New Home

Moving into a new home is exciting — but before you unpack a single box, it’s worth taking a step back and cleaning thoroughly. Even if the previous occupants left the place looking tidy, there are layers of dirt, bacteria, and grime that you simply cannot see. Starting fresh in a genuinely clean home makes a big difference to how comfortable and settled you feel from day one.

Here’s what to clean before you move in — and why each area matters.

The kitchen first The kitchen is the highest priority. Clean inside every cabinet and drawer before putting your utensils and crockery away. Degrease the stovetop, clean inside the oven, and wipe down the inside of the fridge and freezer. Run the dishwasher empty on a hot cycle. Previous occupants’ cooking residue, grease, and food particles can harbour bacteria that you do not want near your food.

Bathrooms top to bottom Scrub the toilet thoroughly, including under the rim and behind the base. Clean the inside of the shower and bathtub, and remove any mould or soap scum from tiles and grout. Wipe down all surfaces and replace the toilet seat if possible. Bathrooms accumulate bacteria quickly, and you want to start with a completely clean slate.

All floors before furniture goes in Moving is the only time you will ever have completely empty floors. Take advantage of it. Sweep, mop, and if there are carpets, have them professionally cleaned before you bring in your furniture and belongings. Once everything is in place, floors become much harder to clean properly.

Inside wardrobes and storage spaces Wipe down the insides of all wardrobes, shelving units, and storage spaces before you fill them. Dust and old debris accumulate in these spaces and can transfer to your clothes and belongings.

Windows, blinds, and curtain tracks Clean the windows inside and out, wipe down all blinds, and wash curtain tracks. Natural light makes a huge difference in a home, and clean windows let in significantly more of it.

Air vents and ceiling fans Dust and debris accumulate in air vents and on ceiling fan blades over time. Cleaning these before you move in prevents that build-up from circulating through your new home’s air from day one.

A move-in clean is one of the most worthwhile investments you can make when settling into a new home. A3 Aspen’s move-in cleaning service covers every one of these areas so you can focus on making the space your own. Get in touch to book your move-in clean today.
